Toilet Installation: What GTA Homeowners Should Know Before Replacing One

Seal Plumbing toilet installation planning and professional plumbing work in a clean GTA property

A toilet can look like a simple swap until the old bowl comes off. The flange may sit too low, the floor may be uneven, the shutoff may not close, or the new tank may hit a shelf. Measuring before purchase prevents many of these surprises.

Professional toilet installation covers more than placing a wax seal. The plumber checks the drain connection, stabilizes the fixture without stressing the porcelain, connects a reliable supply, and tests every joint under repeated flushes.

We would rather find an unusual rough-in or weak flange before a new toilet is sitting in the hallway. A few measurements and a clear photo can prevent a purchase that does not fit the room.

Before you order: Toilet installation depends on rough in distance, flange condition, shutoff reliability, floor level, and clearances. Check these before choosing a model.

Measure the rough in before shopping

The rough in is generally measured from the finished wall surface to the centre of the closet bolts. Baseboard thickness does not set the measurement. Common models suit common dimensions, but older homes and renovations can differ.

Also measure side clearance, front clearance, door swing, vanity drawers, and tank height. An elongated bowl may feel better but can crowd a compact GTA bathroom.

Inspect the flange and finished floor

The closet flange anchors the toilet and connects it to the drain. Cracks, corrosion, loose fasteners, an incorrect height, or damaged surrounding subfloor can keep a new toilet from sitting securely.

Shims can stabilize a sound installation on a slightly uneven finished floor. They cannot repair a rotten floor or a flange that no longer holds bolts. Those conditions need correction before the bowl is set.

Test the shutoff before removal

A fixture stop that turns but still passes water complicates the change. Older multi turn valves can also begin leaking when disturbed after years without use. Test isolation cautiously and know where the next upstream shutoff is located.

Replacing a weak stop and supply connector during the same visit can make future service easier. Do not force a seized handle when you cannot control the main water supply.

Set, connect, and test the new toilet

The plumber dry fits as needed, selects the seal for the flange condition, lowers the bowl without rocking, and tightens fasteners evenly. Overtightening can crack porcelain. The tank and supply are assembled to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Testing includes repeated full flushes, inspection at the base and supply, fill level review, and a stability check. Caulking practice should still allow a concealed leak to become visible rather than trapping water.

Repair or replace

A fill valve, flapper, or seal can often restore a toilet that is otherwise stable and suitable. Read the running toilet guide before assuming the whole fixture needs replacement.

Choose replacement when porcelain is cracked, the base cannot be secured, recurring clogs relate to the fixture, parts are unavailable, or renovation goals justify a different model. Seal Plumbing provides residential plumbing services across the GTA.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which toilet rough in I have?

Measure from the finished wall to the centre of the closet bolts. Confirm the number before ordering a toilet.

Can a new toilet go on an old flange?

Yes when the flange is sound, secure, and at a workable height. Damage or poor support must be corrected first.

Why does a toilet rock after installation?

An uneven floor, loose flange, poor shimming, or damaged support can cause movement. Movement should be corrected before it breaks the seal.

Should I replace the toilet shutoff too?

Replace it when it leaks, will not isolate water, or is unreliable. The plumber can assess it during the installation.

Can the old toilet be removed with household waste?

Disposal rules vary by municipality and contractor scope. Confirm removal before the appointment.

Check the fit before installation day
