Bathroom Fixtures: What to Choose Before the Plumbing Rough-In

Bathroom fixture specification sheets, plumbing plan, and tape measure prepared before rough in

Bathroom fixtures are design choices with construction consequences. A wall mounted faucet changes supply and blocking locations. A freestanding tub sets a precise waste position. A wall hung toilet needs a carrier planned before the wall closes.

Select the products that control rough in early and provide the plumber with current manufacturer specifications. A mood board or product name does not contain enough dimensions to place hidden piping.

We can place hidden piping accurately only when we have real specifications. A screenshot of a beautiful faucet tells us almost nothing about valve depth, hole spacing, supply position or the parts that must be inside the wall.

Before rough-in: Bathroom fixture specifications set drain, supply, valve, carrier, and blocking locations. Choose the critical products before plumbing rough in begins.

Lock the toilet and vanity layout

Confirm toilet rough in, bowl projection, side clearance, tank height, outlet type, and any carrier requirements. For the vanity, provide cabinet drawings, sink position, drawer layout, faucet hole pattern, and trap clearance.

A centered drain can collide with drawers or shelves. Moving it after cabinet delivery adds work that a specification review could prevent.

Choose the complete shower system

The plumber needs the rough valve, trim, shower head, hand shower, diverter, tub spout where applicable, drain assembly, and layout. Components that share a brand name are not always compatible.

Valve depth depends on the final tile assembly. Niche locations, benches, glass, and grab bar blocking also compete for wall space, so the plumbing plan should be coordinated with the full elevation.

Confirm tub and drain details

Acrylic alcove tubs, cast tubs, deck tubs, and freestanding tubs use different support, filler, overflow, and waste arrangements. Check weight, access, drain location, and whether the filler is deck, wall, or floor mounted.

Freestanding fixtures can make final connection space tight. Plan a serviceable assembly rather than relying on an opening that disappears once flooring is finished.

Use specification sheets as the handoff

Create one schedule listing manufacturer, model, finish, quantity, supplier, and delivery date. Attach the technical sheet, not just the retailer page. Retail pages can omit rough dimensions or change when a product is discontinued.

Mark who supplies valves, trims, drains, carriers, stops, and accessories. This avoids a common site delay where visible trim arrives but the matching rough component does not.

Avoid late substitution costs

A substitute can change a drain centre, valve depth, faucet drilling, or support requirement. Send any proposed change to the plumber before accepting it and before walls or floors close.

Review the ensuite planning guide for sequencing. Seal Plumbing can coordinate residential renovation plumbing for GTA projects.

Frequently asked questions

Which bathroom fixtures must be chosen before rough in?

Prioritize toilets, tubs, shower valves and drains, wall mounted faucets, sinks, carriers, and any item with a fixed hidden connection.

Is a product link enough for the plumber?

No. Provide the current technical specification sheet and model number because retail listings often omit critical dimensions.

Can I change the faucet after rough in?

Sometimes, if the new faucet uses the same holes and connection arrangement. Wall mounted changes can require reopening finished work.

Who supplies shower valves and drains?

The contract should say. Confirm responsibility for both visible trim and matching rough components before ordering.

When can fixtures arrive on site?

Rough components may be needed early, while finished pieces should be stored safely. Coordinate delivery with the construction schedule.
